Emotional constipation/ numbness PSA: Do you feel numb? Do you often feeling like bawling your eyes out but just… can’t? If so, you may be dealing with emotional numbness. This term is pretty self-explanatory ’emotional numbness’ is the state of being numb emotionally.
Emotional numbness doesn’t always just affect you, it can also affect others by showing up in the way you interact. You may have decreased empathy, causing you to give inappropriate emotional reactions to sensitive information. But, if you are emotionally numb, it’s important to know that nothing’s “wrong” with you.
Mental health struggles are a natural reaction to unnatural circumstances. Your numbness may be a result of you burning yourself out, whether that be in a professional setting or a social one. Though you are strong and capable of working through hard things, taking on others’ emotions on a consistent basis is taxing and can take a toll on your mental health.
Like physical pains, mental health issues don’t just appear out of nowhere but are often a sign of an unmet need. If you are emotionally numb, your brain and body may be signaling for some time to rest. So, take a rest day!
If you can, sideline your responsibilities and take some time for YOU. Recharging will allow your brain to repair itself and perform optimally again.
